Notes

Otaku Ryuko - Middle-Child Syndrome Shiotome

It is traditional in the clan of the Unicorn that those with large families are given promotions and special considerations, stemming back to their time in the Burning Sands (like many Unicorn traditions) where Shinjo decided that the clan needed to keep its numbers high to stay strong against the myriad threats in foreign lands. Ryuko's family has held particularly true to that fact. Ryuko is the fourth of six children, her family closely related to the Otaku ruling line. Her father is a very handsome Bayushi who married into the Unicorn's most martial family. Her mother is a famed Battle Maiden, and now a highly-honored sensai at the Otaku dojo, and has kept the notable looks that frequently grace Otaku's daughters.

There's probably no longer a question as to why so many children at this point, is there?

Ryuko's eldest sister, Korihime, has earned great glory as a fearless warrior in the shiotome in border clashes with the Lion and the Scorpion. Her next eldest sister, Ritsuko, is something of a tactical genius, and was chosen to be fostered at the Akodo War College. The closest oldest sibling, her only brother Kenjin, has become a renowned horse-breeder amongst his family, impressing even Otaku Kamoko's father Kojiro.

It gets worse. Ryuko's younger siblings, twins (from the Bayushi side of the family, undoubtedly) were born under a particularly auspicious sign. (Writer's note: They're still pre-gempukku, so whatever one would call the fifth and sixth daughter are their names) Great, great things are expected of the two in the upcoming years that all signs point to being tumultuous.

Which leaves Ryuko. What is left for her?

It drives the young samurai-ko mad sometimes that she seems destined to be "merely average." Granted, an "average" Battle Maiden is worth two of any other school's bushi (at least in the view of the shiotome, which perhaps explains why they're so effective - they do their best to prove it), but... how can she excel? She is a comptent warrior, but not nearly so flawless at Korihime. Ryuko's not exceptionally skilled at tactics, and even has a hard time at Go, so Ritsuko definitely outstrips her. Otaku women Do Not breed horses, they become Battle Maidens, so she can't even think of trying to match Kenjin. Her youngest siblings apparently have destiny on their side.

At her gempukku, Ryuko did her parents honor by completing all tasks set before her (even horse archery, which she can't stand), though no knowledgeable on-looker could say she exactly breezed through the trials. At the annual athletic competition that follows the Unicorn gempukku, she placed middle of the pack during the martial arts and kenjutsu tournies. Again, merely average.

It should be noted that none of her parents or siblings look down on her. They all care for her, in the way that it seems that only Unicorn families feel they should in Rokugan. She is especially close to Ritsuko, since Ryuko was the one who wrote to her the most while she was away in Lion lands, but all of her family loves her. She possesses the genial nature and easy-going humor that the Unicorn Clan is known for in abundance (and possibly more so, to cover up her feelings of inadequacy). She pries a bit too much into the others' affairs, but it can probably some effort, any effort, to be noticed.

What can she do?

Her duty, of course, is the correct answer and Ryuko will not flinch from it, but... couldn't there be something more? Some way she can stand out in a family that stands out so much already?

Isn't there?
