Doji Raetsu
Doji Raetsu was born into a small but distinguished family of the Crane. His great-aunt was the mother of the emperor, so Raetsu was born closely into his cousin the emperor's court. His sponsorship to the Doji Courtier School came at a young age and was a favor for his father, a lifelong ambassador to Phoenix courts. He mostly excelled at his training at an early age, although he was phenomenally bad at lying; he just never could get the hang of it. Instead, he developed a knack for getting people to believe they heard something that he did not say. This ability has worked just as well for him throughout his training. His family, descendents of the famed Doji Taehime, had always been closer to the Scorpion clan than others in the Crane. Taehime earned the respect of the Clan of Secrets, and they have always held hope for her descendants. Raetsu himself learned much about them growing up, including some of their more underhanded tactics. His methods reflect this to a certain extent, as he can be a bit more belligerent than most of his family, preferring manipulation and scheming to courtesy and diplomacy. He had planned to eventually spend time in Bayushi lands, studying under their sensei, once he gained the political weight to arrange such a thing. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Shoju's attempted coup destroyed the Clan of the Scorpion, and their sensei are all either dead or in hiding. Raetsu was crushed by the results of the coup. The imperial line was weakened, the Matsu were put in charge of the Lion, and the Scorpion were made anathema. The last being worst of all, as his betrothed, a fair young maiden named Bayushi Mieko, was killed in the resulting purge. Raetsu spent several weeks after the coup claiming to be in prayer and meditation over the horrible actions that occurred. This was, of course, true. What he didn't say is that he was specifically mourning Mieko's death for this time, as he truly loved her dearly. Deep down, he knew that taking a Scorpion as a wife would only bring trouble in the end, but nonetheless, he could not help himself. Even now, reminders of her are sometimes too much for him to bear. |
